Families & Referring Professionals

At present, there are three professionals in Bourne Medicolegal Limited. The three of us have worked together for many years and very much work as a team, like a small NHS CAMHS team.

Malcolm Bourne has been a consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist since 1996, working in Preston for ten years and Blackburn-with-Darwen since 2006. He specialises in diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Eating Disorders, both within his NHS Service and for the CATT Partnership. He sits on the Lancashire Family Justice Council.

He has been a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists since 1992, completing his post-graduate training in Manchester, including a Masters Degree in Psychiatry and medical training in London, with his first degree, B.A. Honours, in Neuroscience at Oxford University.

Ray Roth worked as a Senior Occupational Therapist at the Adolescent Unit at Prestwich Hospital until retiring from the NHS in 2004. He specialised in individual and group work with adolescents with a variety of psychiatric and psychological problems. He has undertaken further training in Group and Family Therapy, and has a doctorate in Psychology as well as Masters and Bachelors Degrees.

He now works with both adolescents and adults for ongoing individual and, as appropriate, family therapeutic work, as well as teaching, training and supervising for Salford and Liverpool Universities.

Maria Farrar has worked as a Child Mental Health Practitioner for Preston CAMHS since 2004. Previously, she has extensive experience in the field of Learning Disabilities. She specialises in ongoing therapeutic work with young people with autistic spectrum disorders and adolescents with severe emotional disturbance.

She completed her initial professional training in Nursing (learning Disabilities) in Lancashire, then completing a B.Sc. (Hons) and post graduate training in Education.

We accept a small number of clinical referrals for ongoing work with children, adolescents and families (including work with adults which Dr Roth undertakes), Initial assessments are by Dr Bourne and either Dr Roth or Ms Farrar. These take place either at our rooms in Prestiwch or Blackburn, or for instance at your G.P. surgery, by arrangement.

We are happy to receive enquiries from families, but require a clinical referral from your G.P. or somebody else with ongoing primary health responsibility, so we can inform them of our assessment and work, and recommend referral elsewhere if this becomes appropriate.

Costs

We charge £450.00 for an initial assessment, including follow up correspondence to your G.P., which you will usually also receive a copy of. Follow up sessions are between £85 and £195, depending on which of us are involved.

We are registered with both BUPA and PPP as providers, so if you are insured with either of these we can accept payment from them. You will just need to obtain their prior authorisation. If you are insured with another company, please contact them to see if they will pay for the work and invite them to contact us if necessary.

Whether you are a family wondering about seeing us, or a G.P. or other professional wanting to refer someone to us, please CONTACT US for an initial enquiry.
